Eat, listen and be happy

Very rarely do two such excellent things come together at the same time as they will Thursday night, when Walker Memorial Library  in Westbrook, Maine, hosts “Cookies & Crime.”

Yes, you read that right. Cookies. And Crime. What’s not to like?

Sisters in Crime’s Lea Wait will be joined by fellow Maine mystery writers Gerry Boyle and Kieran Shields at 7 p.m. to discuss mysteries, Maine and writing. Those attending are encouraged to bring their favorite cookies. But no pressure, the cookie part is optional, according to the library’s website.

Lea’s latest book, Shadow’s on a Cape Cod Wedding, is the sixth of her Shadows Antique Print Mystery series. She has a Young Adult mystery, Uncertain Glory, set in Wiscasset during the Civil War, due out in April, 2014, and Shadows on a Maine Christmas coming out in fall, 2014.

Gerry has two completed books that hopefully we’ll be hearing more about soon: Once Burned, his 10th McMorrow book and The Dead Samaritan, which he wrote with his daughter, Emily Westbrooks. He is also working on Port City Killshot, set in a “down at the heels textile town” a few miles south of Portland. That sounds to this former Journal-Tribune reporter suspiciously like, um, Biddeford?

Kieran’s latest, A Study in Revenge, was released in January and is set in 1893, in Portland. It’s the second in his Archie Lean series. The first was The Truth of All Things.

The event promises to be an interesting one — three very different writers who write in different mystery genres.

And a note to all of us who aspire to someday be the writer talking about her latest book, or just those of us who love mysteries and love to hear them discussed: One of the realities for writers who are trying to make a buck at it is that they have to show up. One of the great advantages to being a lover of mysteries is that we get to listen to what they have to say. It’s informative, sometimes mind-altering and it’s always entertaining. So it’s up to us to show up, too.

And hey, there are going to be cookies.

  1. Love the event title — should be a Ben & Jerry flavor! The mysteries and authors promise more than dessert. Thanks for the heads-up, Maureen,
