Promoting yourself as an author

Have you heard the adage about how once you publish a book, the real work begins? Getting your book published is exciting, but, Surprise! the fun doesn’t end there. Well, I suppose it could, but you may want to get some readers and in order to that, you have to promote your writing.

With technology, promotion doesn’t need to involve traveling and speaking in public – it can, but doesn’t need to. Of course it’s good to have face time with your readers, but with social media and the Internet, there are numerous ways an author can promote him or herself without leaving home.

I love supporting writers and I have my fingers dipped in a few pools that you, Published Author, may be able to take advantage of.

My award-winning blog, Reviews and Interviews, features author interviews (all genres) Monday to Thursday and the occasional Saturday. Fridays are reserved for book reviews. Sundays are announcements for the guest of honor at The Writer’s Chatroom on Sunday evening.

Yesterday’s interview was with fellow Sister in Crime, Kate Flora. Mystery is just one genre she publishes in. The interview focuses on the 3rd book in her Joe Burgess series, Redemption.

I’m open to interviewing anyone who has published a novella, book (e- or print), poetry, graphic novels, or short stories.

Each week, The Writer’s Chatroom hosts a different writing professional or something writing related. Last week, we had a critique chat – folks submitted up to 300 words in advance and received critiques from those who attended. Quite a few Sisters and a couple of Brothers have been guests of honor. If you are traditionally published and have at least 2 books published (or your 2nd is poised to release), this is another great way to get free publicity. It’s all online and is a lot like a bookstore event, but from the comfort of your own home.

We’ve had all genres represented from guests (I love hosting mystery authors, since that’s where my love lies) and some very large names. I encourage you to check out our past guests and upcoming schedule. If you subscribe to the announcement list, you’ll receive a Friday email with details for the upcoming Sunday chat.

It just so happens that, this Sunday, March 4, Kate will be the guest of honor at The Writer’s Chatroom from 7-9PM EST. I’ll be moderating the chat, and everyone is welcome. Kate is offering a book giveaway at half-time to a lucky chatter. No password or registration is needed. It’s a great way to meet writers and ask writing-related questions – it’s access to those who have Been There Done That.

Those are just two areas where I can lend a hand in your book promotion. I can be reached at LisaHaselton at gmail dot com, through comments on this post, or any of the links in my bio below.

Lisa, thanks for sharing that. What kind of traffic does your site get?

Hi Edith – the traffic is increasing thanks to my increase in interviews, last month was just over 5,000 pageviews. 🙂
